Charles Ferguson tells us, “The road to CalArts for me was that my music professor at Columbia College in New York was leaving the Ivy League and the coat-and-tie tradition of the Northeastern schools to transfer to a new school in Valencia, California, where he was to chair the music department in this commune of theater, art, and music, built surprisingly like the wings and plans of a new hospital (Roy Disney’s plan if the school failed!). My professor was Nicholas England, and I, too, changed course (Royal College of Music, London OR follow Professor England to CalArts), graduated with an MFA and headed to the San Francisco area. Almost immediately upon arriving in San Francisco, I saw the notice for a classical guitar instructor at Stanford University. I am now entering my 47th year as Lecturer in Guitar at Stanford University. My classroom is just a few doors away from another CalArts graduate (Applebaum). Stanford needs more CalArts people.
