Frederick Boyce Gardner, former dean of Libraries and Information Services at CalArts, passed away on April 15, 2020. 

Among his many accomplishments while working at the CalArts Library include creating the first computer lab in the LIbrary and securing a donation from Intel Corporation to expand and enhance the lab. Gardner was instrumental in starting and building the campus computer network as well as the Network Services department. In 1992, he secured a donation to purchase and install the Library’s first automated library system. 

Before his appointment as dean, Gardner served as Chair of Academic Council at CalArts. He was also one of the first CalArts leaders who established the first faculty salary improvement system (STEP).
